Women in labor at Woodland Healthcare now have a wide range of options when it comes to pain relief. Patient controlled epidural anesthesia was recently introduced as a pain relief choice at Woodland’s Labor and Delivery unit.

The regional block can reduce the discomfort of labor and provide either analgesia - the full or partial relief of painful sensations or anesthesia - a more intense blockage of all sensations including muscle movement. The PCEA is placed in the same manner as an epidural and will decrease sensation in the lower areas of the body, yet the patient will still be alert and awake. The patient has control over the amount of local anesthesia she feels her body needs by pushing a button at her bedside.

“The PCEA allows the patient to have control over her body,” said Woodland Healthcare Obstetrician Dr. George Wong. “Studies show patients actually use less medication when they have control over how much they can have. And the other advantage is PCEA doesn’t make patients too numb. They have the ability to move their legs and have some sensation.”

First-time mother and Woodland resident Nicole Hostert gave birth to a healthy baby girl on June 10 at Woodland Healthcare. She chose PCEA for her pain relief during labor and she was very satisfied with her choice.

“I think it’s great. It’s nice to know that you have that option to push a button for pain medication,” Hostert said. “I would definitely consider using it again if I have another child.”
